<p>After being fired by Vitol in 2008, Lucinda Gonzalez filed a discrimination complaint with the EEOC.  In the meantime, Gonzalez began working for Johnson Controls.</p>
<p>According to the EEOC, Vitol forwarded a copy of the discrimination charge to Johnson Controls allegedly in retaliation for Gonzalez&#8217;s filing the complaint.  Johnson Controls then fired Gonzalez shortly after receiving the charge from Vitol.</p>
<p>R.J. Ruff, Jr., district director of the EEOC’s Houston District Office, said, &#8220;Even if a charge, made in good faith, is dismissed, an employee must be protected from adverse action for filing the charge.&#8221;</p>

<p>This year&#8217;s report shows an increase in the number of congressional staffers who have filed workplace harassment, discrimination, and retaliation complaints.  There were 168 discrimination and/or harassment claims and 69 retaliation claims filed by Congressional employees in 2010.</p>
<p>Tamara Chrisler, the executive director of the Office of Compliance, said, &#8220;The OOC has felt the impact of a substantial increase in discrimination, harassment, and retaliation cases over the past 5 fiscal years. The OOC dispute resolution program in fiscal year 2010 saw an increase in formal requests for confidential counseling and mediations, compared to five fiscal years ago.&#8221;</p>
