A black security Guard at the Alexander McQueen store in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District claims that his coworkers created a racially hostile work environment.
Othman Ibela, an immigrant from the African nation of Gabon, filed a complaint in March with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
Ibela claims that Alexander McQueen sales clerk, Kimberly Mahnke, “repeatedly made jokes about me running nude in Africa with a spear in my hand” and that store manager Catherine Flynn made jokes about his accent and asked him numerous times “why Muslims were always killing people.”
Ibela claims that the hostile work environment caused him to suffer from depression and panic attacks an that he was hospitalized on at least one occasion.
Ibela, who plans on filing a racial harassment lawsuit against Alexander McQueen, alleges that his pay was docked and his hours were cut after he asked his employer, security company SOS, to be reassigned. Ibela ultimately resigned in January 2013.
