Australia university bookstore employee awarded $600,000 in workplace bullying case

A former sales assistant at the Australia-based Monash University bookstore was awarded $600,000 for being subjected to workplace bullying by her boss.

Wendy Swan claims that five years in a hostile work environment caused her to suffer from chronic anxiety and depression.

Swan alleges that her boss, Kriston Cowell, berated her, subjected her to “sarcasm, hostility, rudeness, and violent behaviour,” humiliated her in front of others, and forced her to complete meaningless tasks, including memorizing lists of books.

Swan claims that she complained about the workplace bullying to the chairman of the board and to the board directors starting in 2003. Two years later she filed another complaint, but the board allegedly did not take any actions to stop the bullying.
