Sexual orientation discrimination lawsuit filed against the Maine Department of Corrections

The Maine Department of Corrections is being sued for sexual orientation discrimination by a gay female former prison guard at the Downeast Correctional Facility in Machiasport.

Kristin King claims that she was subjected to a hostile work environment and “an old boy culture of disrespect for women” because she is a gay woman.

King alleges that she was disciplined more harshly than her male coworkers. King, who started working at the Downeast Correctional Facility in September 2004, was fired in 2011 after taking a short medical leave to treat debilitating panic and anxiety attacks, which King claims were triggered by the hostile work environment that she had been subjected to.
