Sexual harassment lawsuit leads East Orange city council to call for resignation of Mayor Robert Bowser

The East Orange city council is urging Mayor Robert Bowser to resign after details of a sexual harassment lawsuit against the New Jersey mayor have emerged.

Bowser has admitted during depositions to having a sexual relationship with his former research assistant, Corletta Hicks. Bowser admitted to engaging in oral sex with Hicks in his city hall office.

Bowser and Hicks allegedly began their affair in 2008. Hicks was transferred to a job at the municipal court in November 2010 after she filed a complaint with the city HR department. Hicks filed the sexual harassment lawsuit in July 2011.

An investigation into the sexual harassment allegations has already cost the city of East Orange $150,000.

Bowser, who is serving in his fourth term as East Orange mayor and is currently running for a fifth term, has indicated through his spokesperson that he does not plan to resign.
