Jury awards $17,500 to former lifeguard who filed retaliation lawsuit

A former lifeguard at the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service was awarded $17,500 by a jury that found that she was subjected to retaliation for filing a discrimination claim with the EEOC.

Robin Lang had originally filed the discrimination claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after she allegedly received a lower salary than her male coworkers and after less experienced male employees were promoted instead of her.

The judge dismissed her discrimination claim last week on a technicality because Lang waited too long to file her original complaint with the EEOC.

Lang worked for the Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service from 2005 until she was fired in April 2012.
