Hostile work environment at Camden Fire Department costs county $596,000

A jury has awarded two Hispanic Camden firefighters $596,000 after finding that they were subjected to a hostile work environment and were discriminated against by being refused promotions.

Andres Nieves and Samuel Munoz claim that they were passed over for promotions to a rank of captain in 2009 because of their Hispanic ethnicity.

The two firefighters also allege that they were retaliated against and were forced to endure a hostile work environment.

The jury awarded Nieves $390,000 and Munoz $206,000 in lost wages and pension, plus damages for being subjected to a hostile work environment.
