Hostile work environment lawsuit costs Palm Beach County $262,000

A jury ruled that Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Corrections Sgt. Beverly Ellis was subjected to a hostile work environment by her bosses because she is white.

The jury awarded Ellis $262,000 for being suspended and passed up for promotions because of her race.

Ellis originally filed the lawsuit against Palm Beach County Sheriff Rick Bradshaw in 2008.

According to the complaint, Ellis was subjected to discrimination and harassment for several years after filing a discrimination complaint against her then-boss, Lt. Ruby Starks, in 2001.

After the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office allegedly failed to take action against Starks, Ellis filed a discrimination complaint with the EEOC.

In 2004 and 2005, Ellis claims she was passed up for a promotion and suspended without pay because of her race.
