2 employee sexual harassment lawsuit settlements cost Delaware County over $115,000

Delaware County has agreed to pay over $115,000 to settle sexual harassment lawsuits filed in 2009 by two former Delaware County 911 dispatchers.

Shelby Haggard, a former 911 dispatch supervisor, and Joey Lambert, a former 911 dispatcher, claim that they were subjected to a sexually hostile work environment and retaliation by their boss, Don Murphy.

Murphy was accused of going to the residence of another dispatcher and attempting to kiss her. Haggard claims that she received sexual harassment complaints about Murphy from Lambert and another dispatcher. Lambert alleges that Murphy made unwanted sexual advances toward her.

In October 2007, Haggard filed a complaint about Murphy’s alleged sexual harassment to Delaware County Commissioners.

Haggard claims that Murphy retaliated against her for filing the sexual harassment complaint. On November 7, 2007 Murphy demoted Haggard for being “untrustworthy,” and Haggard was then fired on December 3, 2007.

Delaware County will pay $86,500 to settle Haggard’s lawsuit, and the county will pay $31,000 to settle Lambert’s lawsuit.
