Senior Living Properties to pay $42,500 to settle religious discrimination lawsuit

Senior Living Properties has agreed to pay $42,500 to settle an EEOC religious discrimination lawsuit. Senior Living Properties owns 35 senior assisted living facilities in Texas.

Amanda Spalding, an employee at the Senior Living Properties healthcare center facility in Sweetwater, Texas, claims that she was subjected to discrimination by a company administrator, Peggy Scruggs, because her religion does not permit her to work on Sundays.

According to the EEOC, Spalding was not required to work on Sundays during the three years that she was employed at Senior Living Properties.

However, when Scruggs was hired by the company, she allegedly told Spalding that she would have to start working on Sundays and that God would excuse Spalding from this religious requirement because she works in the healthcare industry.

Spalding claims that Scruggs told her that she would not remain an employee at Senior Living Properties if she was unwilling to work on Sundays.
