Former University of Texas women’s track coach files discrimination complaint

Former University of Texas women’s track coach Bev Kearney has filed race and gender discrimination complaints with the EEOC and Texas Workforce Commission.

Kearney resigned her position in January after the university discovered that she had had an inappropriate relationship with one of her athletes more than ten years ago. The university learned of this relationship in October and suspended Kearney in November.

Kearney, who is African-American, claims that she was discriminated against because of her gender and race because UT assistant football coach Major Applewhite, who is white, was allowed to keep his job after he admitted to having an inappropriate relationship with a student trainer in 2008.
