University of Iowa discrimination and retaliation lawsuit

Janis Perkins, the former assistant dean of the University of Iowa’s International Programs department, has filed a discrimination and retaliation lawsuit against the university, Downing Thomas, associate provost of International Programs, and Lori Cranston, a financial officer for the Office of the Provost.

Perkins claims that she was discriminated against, harassed and subjected to a hostile work environment by Thomas and Cranston because of disabilities related to an autoimmune disorder that she was diagnosed with in 2000.

Perkins alleges that the university knew about her disability and that she received numerous positive performance reviews until June 2011, when she was put on a performance inprovement plan. Perkins was terminated in April 2012.
