The city of Stockton has agreed to pay $30,000 to firefighter Ed Rodriguez to settle a race discrimination lawsuit that he filed against the city.
Rodriguez claimed that he was denied promotion by former chief Ron Hittle because of his race. Hittle allegedly created a racially hostile work environment and told Rodriguez that “people like me do not have a place in his senior management positions.”
The city, which promoted Rodriguez upon settling his lawsuit, also fired Hittle for having a management style that was incompatible with the city’s mission and goals.
California attorney Albert M. Ellis from the law firm Hakeem, Ellis & Marengo represented Rodriguez in his race discrimination lawsuit against the city of Stockton.
