National Boss Day Report: Employers paid over $356 million for workplace harassment and discrimination complaints

Workplace harassment and discrimination lawsuits have cost employers over $356 million during the past year.

In honor of National Boss Day, eBossWatch, the leading career resource that enables people to anonymously rate their bosses and evaluate potential employers, today published a study on ‘the state of the workplace.’  According to the report, not everybody has a reason to celebrate their boss.

The eBossWatch study has found that allegations of workplace harassment and discrimination continue to occur at an alarming rate, and complaints are costing employers a shockingly large amount of money.

During the past year, workplace harassment and discrimination complaints have cost employers over $356 million in lawsuit settlement payments and judgments for monetary damages.

Sexual harassment was the most common type of workplace complaint that led to the employer paying a sizable settlement or jury award.  The types of complaints that led to the $356 million in settlement and judgment payments are as follows: 78 sexual harassment, 58 disability discrimination, 56 race discrimination, 47 retaliation, 28 age discrimination, 20 religious discrimination, 22 gender discrimination, 12 pregnancy discrimination, 3 wage discrimination, 3 sexual orientation discrimination, 1 military discrimination.

“Nobody benefits from a hostile work environment, not the employees, not the harassers, and certainly not the employers,” said Asher Adelman, the founder of eBossWatch.  “This report makes it very clear that employers and managers should be doing everything in their power to cultivate and ensure a healthy work environment for their employees.”
