Chrysler $3.8 million religious harassment lawsuit

Karen J. Doran and Deanne S. Medina represented Otto May, a former Chrysler employee, in a religious harassment lawsuit that he filed against his former employer.

May claimed that he was subjected to years of religious and ethnic harassment and death threats from other employees while working as a pipe fitter at Chrysler’s Belvidere, Illinois assembly plant.

In September 2010, a jury awarded May $4.2 million in damages, but the judge decided to vacate the $3.5 million punitive damages award and to reduce the compensatory damages award to $300,000.

May appealed the judge’s decision to vacate the punitive damages award, and in August 2012 a federal appellate court reinstated the $3.5 million punitive damages award.
