NY Assemblyman Vito Lopez censured after sexual harassment allegations

New York State Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez was censured and stripped of his committee chairmanship after being accused of sexual harassment by two former employees.

State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver decided to censure Lopez after the Assembly’s ethics committee unanimously ruled that the sexual harassment claims were credible.

Silver explained that there had been “multiple incidents of unwelcome physical conduct” on the part of Lopez as well as “pervasive unwelcome verbal conduct…including repeated comments about their physical appearance, their bodies, their attire, and their private relationships.”

Silver has also been criticized about allegedly using $103,000 in state funds to pay off the two former employees who had accused Lopez of sexual harassment.
