Sam’s Club pays $440,000 to settle EEOC racial harassment lawsuit

Sam’s Club, the chain owned and operated by Walmart, has agreed to pay $440,000 to settle a racial harassment lawsuit filed by the EEOC.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission had claimed that at least nine Mexican-American employees at the Sam’s Club store in Fresno, California, were subjected to derogatory ethnic slurs by a co-worker.

The employees complained to their manangers about the hostile work environment, but they claim that management didn’t stop the harassment.  Only after the official EEOC charge of discrimination was filed was the harassing employee fired.
