The EEOC has announced that Belk, Inc. has agreed to pay $55,000 to settle a religious discrimination lawsuit that it filed on behalf of former employee Myra Jones-Abid.
Jones-Abid, who worked at Belk’s Crabtree Valley Mall store in Raleigh, NC, claimed that Belk fired her for refusing to wear a Santa hat and apron. Jones-Abid, as part of the Jehovah’s Witness religion, is not allowed to celebrate religious or secular holidays.
