Navy Inspector General rules that Cmdr. Liam Bruen retaliated against junior officer who filed sexual harassment complaint

The Navy Inspector General has ruled that Cmdr. Liam Bruen retaliated against one of his junior officers after the junior officer filed a harassment complaint.

Navy ensign Steve Crowston filed a sexual harassment complaint in February 2010 after Cmdr. Liam Bruen and other officers referred to him as “fagmeister” and other anti-gay slurs.

The Navy dismissed his complaint in May 2010 after conducting an investigation.  In June, Bruen gave Crowston “the worst performance appraisal” he had received during the 16 years that he has served in the Navy.  Crowston appealed the harassment dismissal ruling and added a retaliation claim.

Navy spokesman Lt. Myers Vasquez told FoxNews.com, “Department of Navy Naval IG substantiates the allegation that the then commanding officer of VFA 136 gave Crowston an unfavorable fitness report in reprisal for a sexual harassment and hostile work environment complaint he filed.”
