Gorilla Coffee sues New York Times and ex-employees who complained about ‘hostile work environment’

Gorilla Coffee and its owners, Carol McLaughlin and Darleen Scherer, have filed a defamation lawsuit against the New York Times and eight former Gorilla Coffee employees, who sent an email to the NY Times in April 2010 describing why they all decided to quit.

In April, the New York Times reported that “the baristas quit because of what they call a ‘perpetually malicious, hostile, and demeaning work environment‘ under Carol McLaughlin.”

McLaughlin and Scherer claim that the article that the NY Times published was defamatory and that it was published “with actual knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard as to its truth or falsity or with negligence.”

The New York Times has not yet publicly responded to the lawsuit.
