eBossWatch has selected Kenneth Henry from Proctor, Texas as it’s first “Bad Boss of the Month“ for June 2010. Henry is the owner and manager of Henry’s Turkey Service, a company which housed and placed mentally disabled men to work at a meat processing plant in Iowa. As we reported a few weeks ago, the EEOC has accused Henry’s Turkey Service of underpaying its employees by at least $1 million over the past three years.
Henry reportedly paid his mentally disabled employees about 41 cents an hour after deducting “housing expenses” from their paychecks. In exchange for this so-called “paid housing,” the workers were housed in a deteriorating, roach-infested building that was dexcribed by an Iowa state health official as “deplorable.” In February, the state fire marshal shut down the building after an investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice, state health inspectors, and county prosecutors.
According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, the employees were subjected to a hostile work environment that included being “continually subjected to taunts, name-calling, humiliation and other offensive verbal conduct and mistreatment based upon their disability.” Henry’s Turkey Service was also accused of failing to provide the mentally disabled workers with “adequate access to medical care.”
