Novartis boss pressured saleswoman to get abortion

On the first day of a $200 million sex discrimination trial against the pharmaceuticals company Novartis, a former saleswoman testified that her boss urged her to get an abortion after she asked for a transfer so that she could move in with her fiance.

Christine Macarelli said that she told her then-manager, Bruce Holstein, that getting an abortion “was not an option” during the 2004 telephone conversation.  Macarelli said that the phone call left her feeling “very disturbed” and “very alone.”

Macarelli explained that she did not file a complaint about Holstein’s comments because she “had a co-worker who worked for Bruce, and she complained about him quite a bit, and ultimately she was fired.”
