Former NY1 reporter testifies in sexual harassment trial

A former NY1 News reporter who alleges that she was sexually harassed on the job took the witness stand last week and described the hostile work environment that she endured at the news station.

Adele Sammarco, who started working at NY1 in 1992, was fired in 2001 a few weeks after she complained to her superiors about being sexually assaulted by former reporter Gary Anthony Ramsay.  Sammarco claims that while driving her home from a party, Ramsay held her arms down, put one hand around her neck, and “proceeded to ram his tongue down my throat so hard it felt like it was almost at my Adam’s apple.”

Sammarco claims that other NY1 bosses and employees contributed to the hostile work environment:

  • Vice President of Programming Steve Paulus allegedly had “a dozen news assistants rate who had ‘bigger boobs’ – Sammarco or another reporter. Sammarco won.”
  • Peter Landis, the current Managing Editor at NY1 News and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, allegedly once asked Sammarco to turn around in a dress so he could “get a good look at it.”
  • Former reporter Jeff Simmons “manipulated a picture of her by adding giant breasts, and the photo was then plastered all over the newsroom.”
  • Former HR manager Elizabeth Fanfant was also named in the lawsuit.
