Broward School District whistleblower awarded $210,000 in retaliation lawsuit

A carpenter employed by the Broward County School District in Florida was awarded $210,000 after a jury agreed that he was retaliated against by the school district after he filed whistleblower complaints about alleged racial discrimination, harassment, fraud, and theft of school district supplies.

The carpenter, Dennis Brown, who suffers from asthma, claimed that his health worsened after he was forced to work in a portable classroom that was infested with mold and mildew.  Brown repeatedly complained about the harmful working conditions and brought several notes from doctors confirming his health problems.

Brown said, “There is so much corruption in the school system, and everybody knows it, but are afraid to speak out.  I’ve gone to the superintendent and all the school board members, but they look the other way.”
