Black employees sue Nashville Electric Service for discrimination

In September 2009, twenty black current or prospective employees filed a lawsuit against the utility company Nashville Electric Service for being subjected to discrimination and a racially hostile work environment.

The lawsuit alleges that the black employees were subjected to racist slurs from coworkers and managers and that the workers who complained suffered from retaliation.

One of the workers claims that an NES foreman told him in February 2007, “During Black History Month where I come from, we hang people.”  Seven of the African-American workers allege that they heard racial slurs numerous times at work.
