EEOC sues Shumate Sawmill for sexual harassment and retaliation

The EEOC filed a sexual harassment and retaliation lawsuit against sawmill operator George C. Shumate, Inc.  The EEOC lawsuit accuses Shumate Sawmill’s president and owner of sexually harassing female employees and retaliating against Monique Ingram, a former employee who was fired after complaining about the hostile work environment.

The EEOC alleges that Ingram and other female employees were subjected to sexual harassment from late 2005 until the beginning of 2007.  The George Shumate Inc sawmill’s owner allegedly tried to kiss a number of female employees, made inappropriate sexual comments to female employees, and offered a female employee $100 if she would show him her breasts.

After Ingram complained to one of the company supervisors about the owner’s sexual harassment, the EEOC lawsuit claims that the company did not act to stop the hostile work environment.  Instead, the company fired Ingram in February 2007.
